FINANCE MANAGER

Salary: £35,000 - £42,000 (depending on experience)

Pushkin House is a dynamic arts organization which continues to critically explore complicated Russian cultural, historical and political legacy and provides a platform to artists and creative practitioners from Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia, focusing on themes of identity, citizenship, migration, displacement and belonging.

Pushkin House is currently undergoing a period of change and transformation. You will provide comprehensive financial and administrative management to facilitate the smooth running and effectiveness of the charity. The Finance Manager will provide the Board and Executive Director with the most accurate financial information at all times, underpinning financial planning and optimizing fundraising. This is a new role for the Pushkin House with the opportunity for the postholder to shape and develop it.

This role requires practical, hands-on experience of delivering the wide range of finance and accounting services required by a small business or charity; you will have a sound working knowledge of Xero and Google Sheets/Excel; strong attention to detail, producing work with a high level of accuracy; excellent written and oral communication skills and an ability to use information effectively and apply sound judgment in order to make decisions.

Responsibilities: 

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

  • with the Executive Director, build budgets for the organization and its projects;

  • provide timely month-end management accounts and updated cash flow projections against agreed budgets and any other income and expenditure project reports as requested;

  • produce the monthly management accounts and other financial information as required to inform decision making;

  • ensure correct charity fund accounting practices;

  • manage relationships with the bank, investment managers, auditors and tax advisors;

  • develop business partnering practices to support budget holders and promote broader financial awareness amongst Pushkin House’s staff team;

  • develop and standardize finance forms, paperwork, reports and systems to make the charity more efficient;

  • check and process any online donations;

GRANT MANAGEMENT

  • support fundraising team by developing accurate budget forecasts for proposed activity within agreed models;

  • set up budgets for new grant funded programmes in line with grant requirements;

  • prepare financial information to support periodic grant claims;

STRATEGIC PLANNING

  • input into strategic and business planning, supporting the Director with financial planning;

  • oversight of the business, financial and governance aspects of the center;

TAX COMPLIANCE

  • keep up-to-date with VAT, PAYE and other relevant tax legislation;

  • prepare quarterly VAT returns and ensure accuracy;

  • prepare MGETR claim and ensure accuracy;

  • prepare Gift Aid Claim and ensure accuracy.

Required skills and experience: 

ESSENTIAL:

  • strong working knowledge of charity accounting, fully or part qualified ACA/ACCA/CIMA accountant;

  • experience of budgeting, business analysis and planning;

  • knowledge and experience of charity accounting requirements and standards;

  • experience of using accounting software such as XERO and Quickbooks;

  • experience of charity SORP Annual Reports;

  • understanding of Creative Sector Tax Reliefs;

  • good working knowledge of VAT (including partial exemption) PAYE and other relevant taxes;

  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written;

  • interest in the working projects run by Pushkin House; 

DESIRABLE:

  • proven, extensive and appropriate business management experience in a creative/arts and/or charity environment;

  • knowledge of the charity sector in the UK.
