RSVP: Social at Pushkin House, 7 December 2023

  • 5a Bloomsbury Square London London, England, United Kingdom (map)

Join us on Thursday 7 December for the next Social at Pushkin House. Taking place on the first Thursday of each month at our bar, the Socials are hosted by prominent cultural figures, activists, authors and others, who will bring you a varied and engaging evening.

Our December Social is led by political scientist Dr Ben Noble, Associate Professor of Russian Politics at University College London in the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, and Associate Fellow at Chatham House. He is the series editor of New Perspectives on Eastern Europe and Eurasia, published by Hurst, and a co-author of Navalny: Putin’s Nemesis, Russia’s Future? (Hurst and Oxford University Press, 2021), which was shortlisted for the Pushkin House Book Prize 2022.

During the Social, Ben will invite those present to reflect on the term "post-Soviet". More than thirty years since the collapse of the USSR, this term seems increasingly inappropriate as a general term to refer to such a diverse group of countries. Should the term be rejected completely? If so, which other terms might be used in its place? If not, when does it remain an appropriate term to use?

The bar opens at 6pm with happy hour on all cocktails till 7:30pm and 50% discount all evening for Friends of Pushkin House (just £50 annually or £25 for students; with Friends also receiving a 20-50% discounts on most of our event tickets and 15% off in our Bookshop).

Entry is free, but RSVP is essential.
